About our first time beginner driver lessons
To start you off we concentrate on the quite back roads of Surrey where there are minimal pedestrians, hazards and obstacles. First of all we teach you the basics of your car and explain simply how the vehicle works. That way you will be more comfortable and confident when you come to practicing simple maneuvers and basic car control skills. Repetition is the key when learning to drive and that is how we teach so clutch control, gear changing, signalling and mirror checks become second nature.

RECENT DRIVING TEST CHANGES

Driving Test Changes 2017
The driving test from Monday 4 December 2017 to include following directions from a sat nav which will increase the free driving phase of the test from 10 minutes to 20 minutes and testing different manoeuvres. You will no longer be required to reverse around corners.
Highway Code Changes in 2022
  1. Introduction of a new "hierarchy of road users" that prioritizes the most vulnerable road users, with pedestrians at the top, followed by cyclists, horse riders, motorcyclists, cars/taxis, vans/minibuses, and large passenger/goods vehicles.
  2. Pedestrians now have priority at junctions. Drivers must give way to pedestrians waiting to cross a road into which or from which the driver is turning.
  3. Cyclists are advised to ride in the center of their lane on quiet roads, in slower-moving traffic, and when approaching junctions.
  4. New guidance for overtaking cyclists and horse riders:Drivers should leave at least 1.5 meters when overtaking cyclists at speeds up to 30mph, with more space at higher speeds
  5. Cyclists have priority at roundabouts. Drivers should not attempt to overtake cyclists within the roundabout and should allow cyclists to move across their path.
  6. Cyclists are allowed to pass slower-moving or stationary traffic on the right or left side, with caution.
  7. The "Dutch Reach" method is now recommended for opening car doors, using the hand furthest from the door to reduce the risk of injuring passing cyclists.
  8. Stricter rules on mobile phone use while driving, including a ban on taking photos, videos, playing games, or scrolling through playlists. Read more

  2. Requiring learners to move or cancel their test at least 10 working days before the test date to avoid losing their fee, instead of the current 3 working days.
  3. Changing the law to allow driving examiners to conduct the eyesight check in any level of light, not just daylight, and use more methods for checking eyesight.
  4. Introducing digital pass certificates to replace paper ones.
  5. Providing learner drivers with better access to information about driving instructors and their students' success rates, pending legislation.
  6. Increasing the independent driving portion of the test to 20 minutes, which is double the previous time.
  7. Including the use of a sat nav provided by the examiner for directions during the test, though one in five tests will not feature a sat nav.
  8. Changing the types of reversing maneuvers tested, such as parking in a bay and reversing out, or reversing into a bay and driving out.
  9. Asking one safety question before driving and another during driving, instead of two questions before driving.

Free Driving and Sat Nav part of the Test

Q. WHat is THE Free Driving PART OF THE DRIVING TEST?

Answer: The free driving part of the driving test is a crucial component designed to assess a candidate's ability to drive independently and now lasts for 20 mins and includes following directions from a Sat Nav.

During this free driving phase, candidates are expected to demonstrate safe driving practices while adhering to road signs and regulations. The use of a sat nav not only helps in navigation but also reflects the modern driving experience, where GPS technology is prevalent. Driving test participants should familiarise themselves with the sat nav system prior to the test to ensure they can follow directions confidently and effectively.

Driving School FAQs for Surrey

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

QUESTIONS: What is your driving schoools pass rate?

Answer:
We're proud to maintain a pass rate of over 75% for first-time drivers. However this pass rates does fluctuate slightly depending on which Driving Tests Centre you use.

QUESTION: Which Driving Test Centre in Surrey has the highest pass rate?

Answer:  The Guildford Driving Test Centre in Surrey has one of the highest pass rates. Over the past five years, Guildford's pass rates have consistently been above the national average, with rates such as 54.0% in 2016-17 and 50.2% in 2019-20. This would therefore suggests that Guildford is a favourable location for driving test candidates in Surrey.

QUESTION: Why do some driving test centres have higher driving test pass rates?
There are actually many factors that can contribute to a high pass rate at a driving test centre:
  1. Location: Rural and less densely populated areas tend to have higher pass rates compared to urban areas. The top driving test centres with high pass rates are often located in rural towns, particularly in Scotland.
  2. Traffic conditions: Areas with less traffic congestion and fewer cars on the roads generally have higher pass rates.
  3. Road complexity: Test centres in areas with less complicated junctions and simpler road layouts tend to have higher pass rates.
  4. Lower stress environment: Quieter roads and less busy high streets can make the test less stressful for learner drivers.
  5. Practice opportunities: Learners in rural areas may benefit from more practice time on quieter roads outside of regular driving lessons.
  6. Population density: Less densely populated areas generally have higher pass rates.
  7. Gender: According to the data, male drivers were slightly more likely to pass first time than female drivers (51.6% vs 46.9%).
  8. Local driving conditions: Familiarity with local roads and typical driving conditions in the area can be an advantage.
  9. Test centre specifics: Some test centres may have routes or testing procedures that are perceived as easier or more straightforward.
It's important to note that while these factors may contribute to higher pass rates, they don't guarantee success. The skills and preparation of the individual learner driver remain crucial factors in passing the driving test.

What CONSTITUTES A DRIVING TEST PASS

How many minor and major faults are needed to fail a driving test in Surrey (which follows the same rules as the rest of the UK).
We recommend that you aim to pass your driving test without any minor faults as this shows you are a good, safe and confident driver.

Minor Driving Test Faults:
  • Also called "driving faults",
  • Less serious errors that don't pose immediate danger,
  • Examples include not checking mirrors frequently enough, slight steering inaccuracies, or minor hesitation,
  • You can accumulate up to 15 minor faults and still pass the test.

Major Driving Test Faults:
  • Classified as either "serious faults" or "dangerous faults",
  • Critical mistakes that show a significant lack of control or understanding of safe driving practices,
  • Examples include failing to observe properly at junctions, speeding, or incorrect positioning on the road,
  • Just one major fault results in failing the test.

To fail a driving test in Surrey:
  • Accumulating more than 15 minor faults,
  • Committing even one major (serious or dangerous) fault,
  • Getting three minor faults for the same error, which can be upgraded to a serious fault as this shows repetition.

It's important to note that while you can have up to 15 minor faults and still pass, it's best to keep these to a minimum. The goal is to demonstrate safe and competent driving throughout the test not to make less than 15 mistakes.
