Latest Driving Test Changes: What’s New in 2026
The DVSA has rolled out several updates to make tests more realistic and effective. From late 2025 (now fully in effect), key changes include:

• Fewer routine stops (down from 4 to 3 per test) and more time on faster roads.
• Emergency stops now only in 1 in 7 tests (previously 1 in 3).
• Longer independent driving – up to the full test duration using sat nav or signs for better real‑world prep.

Theory tests have also expanded, with new questions on life‑saving skills like CPR and defibrillator use starting in 2026, reflecting drivers’ role as first responders.

Booking Your Driving Test: New Rules for 2026
From spring 2026, booking changes aim to reduce cancellations:

• Only learners can book their own practical tests – instructors no longer can.
• Maximum 2 changes allowed per booking.
• Tests can only move to nearby centres from the original location.

We’re experts at finding late cancellations and short‑notice tests across Surrey test centres, so get in touch early. Theory passes remain valid for 2 years.

Potential Rule Changes: Minimum Learning Period Ahead?
The Department for Transport is consulting (until March 2026) on a Minimum Learning Period (MLP) between theory and practical tests – possibly 3 or 6 months, plus minimum supervised hours (professional lessons + private practice) and a mandated syllabus/logbook. While not law yet, this could mean more structured prep. DVSA still recommends 45 hours of lessons + 22 hours private practice for test readiness – no minimum yet, but plan ahead!
